The first official event of the Research Training Group GRK 2423 FRASCAL of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg, will take place on April 2, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Hans-Georg-Waeber-Saal of the Fraunhofer IISB, Schottkystr. 10, 91058 Erlangen.

“How do different materials break apart?”

So far, there is a lack of a holistic, comprehensive approach with which fracture processes in various, especially in heterogeneous materials and at different time and length resolutions can be detected.

For this reason, the young researchers of the GRK 2423 FRASCAL want to develop simulation methods in 12 interdisciplinary projects to detect fracture processes in brittle, granular and porous materials ranging from sub-atomic to macroscopic dimensions at various time scales (“Fracture across Scales – FRASCAL”). These insights will allow tailoring and optimising materials against fracture.

The GRK 2423 FRASCAL research training group will be in intensive and long-term scientific exchange with three internationally recognized and renowned scientists in the field of fracture mechanics Prof. Michael Ortiz (California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA), Prof. Elias Aifantis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) and Dr. Laurent Ponson, (Pierre et Marie Curie University, Paris, France). All three experts will especially travel to the kick-off meeting and talk about their fields of research.

As a highlight of the opening event of the GRK 2423 FRASCAL, it was possible to acquire the well-known futurologist, media scientist and author Dr. Bernd Flessner. In his talk “Fictitious Materials – From Cavorite to Dilithium” (will be held in German with short English summaries), he will bring the topic “New Materials” to the audience from a quite different angle. He delves into a variety of materials invented by science fiction writers for their works and expresses the visions and dreams of scientists and researchers.
